When Should I Replace My AC System?

When Should I Replace My AC System?

In a perfect world, the answer would be “never.” Well, that’s not going to happen.

As imperfect as they might be, today’s better-made and well-maintained air conditioning systems have an estimated shelf life of up to 15 years and more. While anything’s possible, one thing is certain: if you live in your home long enough, sooner or later you’re going to have to replace your AC system.

When might that be? Well, from our experience, many people replace their system once energy costs start rising out of control. They know the money they save on electricity can eventually cover the entire cost of a new AC system, sometimes in as little as a few years.

But let’s say you can live with rising energy bills and just can’t see replacing a system that still works at least reasonably well. What other reasons might you have for replacing yours?

  • Frequent and increasingly costly repairs. Would you pay $200 to have your system repaired if you had reason to believe it would run “just fine” after that?  Sure you would.  But how about $500, $1,000, or even $1,500?  In other words, what’s the point when you say, “enough is enough,” and finally decide your money is better spent on replacement?

  • Noisy operation. Remember when your system was first installed and how you could barely hear it? Well, the older the system, the louder it becomes, with sounds like popping, banging, and whirring becoming increasingly likely. Noisy operation doesn’t necessarily mean it’s time for a new system, but it is something you want to get checked out.

  • Hot and cold spots. A well-designed AC system should provide equal amounts of cool air from one room to the next.  If yours isn’t cooperating, it might be caused by a faulty thermostat or a leaky air duct, but it also could be general system wear and tear.

If your AC system isn’t performing up to par and you’re not sure what the problem is or what to do about it, contact Correct Temp to schedule a complete system inspection. We’ll tell you exactly what’s going on, give you our best recommendations, and work with you to implement the perfect solution.  Just like always.
