How to Stay Cool and Save Money at the Same Time

How to Stay Cool and Save Money at the Same Time

It’s summertime, and the living is easy…that is, unless you’re trying to stay cool while keeping utility bills in check. Sure, you could tape a few ice packs to your body or pour a bucket of ice water on your head every hour or so, but that’s not practical – or enjoyable.

So, to maximize indoor comfort while minimizing your electricity costs, why not try these tips on for size?

Programmable Thermostat – If you’ve yet to switch to a programmable thermostat, you’re really missing out. Not only can you set a desired sleeping temperature but also preset the thermostat to a higher temp while no one is home and have it automatically drop a few degrees so things are nice and cool upon your arrival.

Ceiling Fans – Ceiling fans with central AC are twice as nice when it comes to cooling a home. Up the temp on your thermostat by two to four degrees at night – once indoor temps equal or fall lower than the temp outdoors – and use ceiling fans to help blow cool air around.

Clean HVAC Filter – A clean filter helps an AC system work more efficiently, which means less money spent on cooling costs. For best results, check your air filter monthly and clean or replace as needed.

Dine Al Fresco – Cooking indoors can generate a lot of heat. Instead, opt for light meals that can be grilled outdoors, or not cooked at all, like hearty salads and sandwiches.

Block It Out – Sunshine may feel good on your face, but those rays coming in through the windows cause the heat to rise. Keep window coverings closed during the day, especially in those parts of the home that get abundant sunlight.

Delay Chores – Avoid running major appliances like the washer and dryer or dishwasher during the day as the heat they generate makes your central AC system work harder. Save those chores for early in the morning or at night when outside temps are cooler.

Keep Doors Open – If the central AC system is on, keep all interior doors open to allow cool air to move freely and keep the temperature balanced throughout your home.

Check the Vents – Make sure all air vents are open and free of obstructions. Give them an occasional vacuuming to remove built-up debris and dust.

Shorter Showers – Skip the long, hot shower or bath on hot days. Better yet, turn down the temperature on your water heater to the warm setting. And don’t forget to run the bathroom vent fan during and after a bath or shower.

Another way to enjoy added comfort and lower electricity costs is with annual preventive maintenance performed by Correct Temp. We’ll inspect your system to ensure both maximum comfort and safety. Annual maintenance also helps extend equipment life. Why not contact us today for service?
